Local Carnivals Kick Off Season with Joy and Friendship

Authored by: Kim Wiggins

Over the weekend of 26-27 October, the local North Coast surf sports community came alive with the first two carnivals of the season, drawing families and competitors together for a weekend filled with laughter and camaraderie.

The senior competitors faced large and challenging conditions at Park Beach on the Saturday, holding their own against powerful waves and turbulent swell. It was impressive to watch and a privilege to help facilitate the carnival.

On the Sunday our under 8’s had their first taste of a local surf sports event, with North Coast nippers coming together for the junior Jetty carnival. We welcomed competitors from 7 of our 8 clubs, with Nippers attending from as far north as Minnie Water and Nambucca in the south.

The atmosphere was electric as kids reunited with friends from across local surf lifesaving clubs, enjoying a variety of surf sports that emphasised the importance of teamwork, surf awareness and fun.

As an official at the event, I witnessed first-hand the spirit of mateship that permeated the day. It was heartwarming to see children comforting and encouraging one another, embodying the true essence of friendship. Their respectful behaviour and support for one another highlighted the values we cherish in our community.

The junior and senior carnivals not only marked the beginning of the season but also reinforced the bonds that make our surf lifesaving community strong. Hearing competitors as young as 8 cheer one another on really helped to reinforce the message that we are one big surf family. It warmed my heart. In the u13’s boys 2km beach run, four competitors from Coffs Harbour, Sawtell and Woolgoolga crossed the finish line together, with smiles on their faces. In another event, nippers ran to support a young competitor who had trouble with a cramp while completing her event.

Reflecting on the weekend, I was struck by the willingness of our Nippers to support one another and lend a hand above all else. It reminded me that this what surf lifesaving is all about. As the sun set on a successful weekend of competition, it was clear that these events would be remembered for their joy, connection, and the incredible spirit of our young athletes.
