WOOLGOOLGA SLSC TO HOST THE BIGGEST EVENT OF THE SEASON

STORY FROM ABC NEWS 5.9.22: International surf life saving’s best athletes will compete on the NSW mid north coast next month for the Summer of Surf World Cup following an announcement on Monday.

Woolgoolga Beach, north of Coffs Harbour, will host the four-day event including the surf ironman qualifying series, Australian surf ski series and Australian surf swim series.

Ten-thousand people are expected to converge on the small coastal village, tripling its population for the four day event.

Some of the sports biggest names will compete: Ellie Halliday, Matt Bevilacqua, Georgia Miller and Lachlan Tame.

Four time ski-champion and Olympian Tame said the event was an opportunity to showcase elite athletes in an event not seen since before the pandemic.

“Just to have a World Cup in Australia after doing them all over the world and being able to show off our sport in a regional setting is so exciting,” Tame said.

A boost to the local economy

The event was announced by the NSW government which has awarded a $200,000 grant from the NSW Regional Acceleration Fund.

Deputy Premier Paul Toole said the event would help put regional NSW on the map for tourism over the summer.

“Not only will there be athletes from Australia but right across the world, they’ll be able to see and explore what’s great about this region,” he said.

Coffs Harbour MP Gurmesh Singh agreed.

“It will showcase this region across a global audience and will be beamed into livings rooms across Europe and Asia,” he said.

The International event will kick off on October 27 and run through to October 30.
